Miocene-Darvaz Fm
Type Locality and Naming
In Southwest Tajikistan and in some adjacent areas, the Miocene has conditionally been divided into lower, middle, upper, and middle-upper Miocene in the deposits attributed to the Miocene. These correspond to the suites established by A. R. Buracheck. The materials that refine the understanding of the distribution of these suites and the distribution of various facies in them, used in this work, were obtained by Ya. R. Melamed, S. E. Arvanitaki, and others (Melamed, 1965).

Lithology and Thickness
In the South Gissar region, red-colored cross-bedded sandstones and claystones with subordinate interlayers of clays are conditionally referred to the Miocene. Thickness is 130-800 m.
In the eastern part of the Zaalaik region, Miocene is conditionally attributed to red-colored sandstones, claystones, and clays with lenses of conglomerates and rarely gypsum. Thickness 500-1200 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the eastern part of the Zaalaik region, they conformably overlay the Eocene and Oligocene deposits. (Geol. USSR, vol. 25, 1972).
Upper contact
In the South Gissar region, they are absent in the Shuysk layers Fm of the Oligocene, which are unconformably overlain by Quaternary formations.
In the eastern part of the Zaalaik region, they are conformably overlain by Pliocene conglomerates (Geol. USSR, vol. 25, 1972).
Regional extent
In conclusion, it should be noted that the strata described in this section are most similar in color to the lower Miocene? Bolijuan Fm of the Southwestern Tajikistan, however, there are no other more objective data for such correlation.
In the Qaramazar and South Ferghana regions, as well as in Central Tajikistan and on the Pamir, the Miocene remains unstratified to date.
